The Duero River is the backbone of the landscape and determines the character of Abadía Retuerta’s terroir. An arduous job, carried out by his expert hands, which began with the identification of the different vineyard plots according to the variety planted, the type of soil, the exposure, the altitude, among other tasks to settle his precious vines.
A total of 54 differentiated plots were identified, which are located adjacent to each other
to the abbey at an altitude of 720 meters and, on the other side of the Duero, on the slopes at an altitude of 850 meters.
Devotion, perseverance and tradition are intrinsic to the character of Abadía Retuerta. Its meticulous work in developing all the plots individually, with the utmost respect for the grape using gravity in all its processes.
The soils
The singular peculiarity and great variety of soils make Abadía Retuerta wines unique and inimitable. The aromatic and taste characteristics of the wines, as well as their color, may vary according to the origin and composition of the soils: limestone, clay-limestone molasse, clayey sediments, sandy or sandy gravels.
The characteristics of the soils themselves determine the development of the vines, the water reserve, the temperature and the composition. The passage of the Duero River provides a unique, complex and highly heterogeneous terroir, which is endowed with sediments, pebbles and sands, making it an enclave of great potential for making excellent wines.
Abadía Retuerta’s winery and vineyard team have focused their efforts on studying these conditioning factors in order to know every detail in order to know every detail of and provide virtue to their wines.
Uniqueness and differentiation
The particularity of the valley in which it is located, which is narrower than the rest of the Ribera del Duero, magnifies the wines of Abadía Retuerta, making them unique. Its slopes are closer together than in other areas, which means that temperatures drop significantly at different points of the estate and register the coldest temperatures in the province of Valladolid.
Elimate change is a fact, as we found out after carrying out the the study of the microclimate of Abadía Retuerta, of the last 50 years. This fact has led to the tothe winery and vineyard teamto the study of other varietiesas well as different oenological practices that allow us to adapt our winery and vineyard at to all these changes in the future..
