A place of great winemaking tradition where vines were planted in the twelfth century brought by the Premonstratensian monks, now recognized with its own Protected Designation of Origin. Since May 2022 we have been a Protected Designation of Origin. A distinction that has
has been granted by the European Commission, a seal of quality recognized by the European Union and which endorses our wines as a product with a guarantee of origin, quality and tradition.
Documents found place these lands as a very ancient exploitation with great roots and tradition in the cultivation of vines, around the Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta.
Historians note that the vine is a crop that originated in the Near East. Its introduction in the Peninsula is attributed to the Romans, who spread the vine throughout the north of the peninsula, reaching the lands of the Duero and, therefore, the lands of Abadía Retuerta at the beginning of the Christian era.
It was in 1988 when the company Sandoz, and owner of the Abadía Retuerta estate, observing the enormous and particular potential that these lands offered, decided to “revive” this historic vineyard and recover the winemaking tradition that had been lost since the 1960s.
In 1994, vigneron Pascal Delbeck (director of Château Ausone and Château Belair) joined the project and designed the current winery, which was built in 1996. It was in that same year that the current winemaker and director of the vineyard and winery, Ángel Anocíbar, joined the team.
The particularity of the valley in which it is located, which is narrower than in the rest of the Ribera del Duero, the fact that its slopes are closer together than in other areas, which causes temperatures to drop significantly, and the unique peculiarity and great variety of soils magnify the wines of Abadía Retuerta.
Abadía Retuerta’s winery and vineyard team have focused their efforts on studying these conditions in order to know every detail of their estate and provide virtue to their wines.
A meticulous work is carried out by expert hands in the vineyard, who take care of each of the 54 plots and their terroir with care and care, based on organic farming, with minimal intervention, anticipation and constant study of the climate.
After the expected harvesting of the grapes, carried out plot by plot, the clusters pass through the sorting table where expert hands perform a precious work choosing the clusters of the highest quality.
In order to preserve the development and environmental quality of the site and its lands, Abadía Retuerta has a Forestry Management Plan. It is committed to preserving its biodiversity through its membership of the Natura 2000 network and implements policies for repopulation and optimal waste management.
Therefore, aware of its impact on the environment, Abadía Retuerta’s environmental management is aimed at understanding, controlling and reducing its impact with the ultimate goal of achieving a sustainable activity.
