Our commitment to art
Art at Abadía Retuerta
Commitment to respect and improvement
Abadía Retuerta is synonymous with and committed to respecting and improving the heritage, natural and historical legacy, a legacy inherited since the founding of the Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta in 1146, on the banks of the Duero River, by
the Premonstratensian Order. We are firmly committed to a project that orbits around this natural and historical heritage, with a philosophy in which sustainability is the spearhead of our actions.
Preserving the historical legacy
The experience
In May 2008, the rehabilitation works began. From the beginning, the project was conceived not only as a hotel and winery, but as a universe in which to live a unique experience through, of course, the artistic and historical legacy. The Italian architect Marco Serra was responsible for the project, who faithfully respected the architectural and philosophical legacy, as well as the original structures of the monastery. In doing so, he preserved the architectural styles as well as the manifestation of the Premonstratensians’ way of life. Europa Nostra awarded Retuerta LeDomaine Abbey the European Union’s Cultural Heritage Award.
Another example is the Museum Garden, which perfectly reflects the peace and tranquility of the interior, although Rückriem’s sculptures are avant-garde in style, in perfect contrast to the ancient stone of the building.
Rumor of Limits V, Eduardo Chillida
The latest addition to its art collection is a unique piece sculpted in steel by Eduardo Chillida in 1959. Rumor of Limits V’ is the work of the artist from San Sebastian that can now be enjoyed in the Santa María de Retuerta Abbey, a place chosen for its location because of the perfect connection that the space establishes with the work and the sculptor.
Living with Art
In short, Abadía Retuerta is consolidating its position as a destination based on art: the architectural complexity, the unique and magnificent Collection of works of art and the determined will to share this wealth with our visitors through actions such as the “Living with Art” experience articulate a historical heritage that joins the diversity of a natural heritage reflected in each of our wines.
