Reasons for study:

• This is a long-cycle variety that must adapt well to the new climate situation caused by global heating.
• A variety that was traditionally grown in the Duero Valley, and which is now undergoing a resurgence.

Initial conclusions:

• The first vintage had good ripening, and we are now studying how to cultivate these grapes in a way that brings out the very best of the terroir.

Key aspects:

• It is believed that the estate’s Premonstratensian monks cultivated this variety as early as the 12th century.

Tasting Notes

One of our signature white varieties. An elegant and wellbalanced wine, with delicate floral aromas such as acacia, and subtle undertones of citrus peel. On the palate it is dry and light, with a slight saline note in its long, refreshing finish.

Vintage

A long, complex grape harvest. The 2023 vintage was marked by high temperatures and drought. The rain arrived later than usual, and at the most delicate times of the growing cycle, so the different terroirs of Abadía Retuerta PDO had to be carefully managed in order to achieve the desired results. The hot weather in April led to early budding, before the drastic fall in temperatures in May curbed the growth of the vines. There was still cloud cover and rainfall until mid-June, so the team had to carefully monitor any possible outbreaks of disease in the plants. In the summer, the extreme heat came at the end of the cycle, but watering helped keep the situation under control. Then, practically at the start of the harvest, the rain came back again. In this new vintage, the work at the sorting table was crucial in order to select the grape at its peak ripeness. The experience and meticulous work of the winery and vineyard team has led to the creation of wines with superb concentration and structure, as well as mature and fine tannins, and abundant fruit.
