Sustainability is part of our very essence. The first chapter in the history of Abadía Retuerta was written in 1146, when the Premonstratensian Order came over France and settled in a beautiful enclave by the river Duero. This was the beginning of a true legacy, which is now almost a thousand years in the making, and based on the foundations of a cultural, historic and natural heritage.
The Abbey’s restoration is a prime example of sustainability. The intervention was profound, respectful and entirely committed to returning the estate to its former glory: previously, in 1931, the Abbey had been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument, making it a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC). The ultimate aim was to protect and conserve the estate’s historic heritage, remaining true to its original architecture.
Our mission today is to pass on this heritage to upcoming generations, in the best possible conditions. This is why we are so firmly committed to sustainability, including the launch of bold new initiatives and the rolling-out of ethical, responsible policies that work to emphasise the value of our history while also supporting the future of our local community.
The revival of Abadía Retuerta was initially a wine project, and the estate has since grown to become a resort of experiences. The project takes a sustainable approach to managing the estate’s heritage, while also seeking to enhance the region by generating jobs, boosting its socioeconomic fortunes and promoting sustainable tourism.
Abadía Retuerta sees the ESG criteria (i.e. relating to environmental, social and governance matters) as a fundamental pillar of the business’s activity. We work, every day, to make a positive impact on people’s wellbeing, on our surroundings and on the sustainability of the planet. To do so, we follow a strategy based on a strong commitment to all environmental, social and governance issues, ever seeking to stimulate inclusive and sustainable growth.
Every year we publish a Sustainability Report following the criteria established by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), supported by and linked to the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN’s Agenda 2030.
